I have my calendar marked to trim back the hydrangea 1st of March.

We are expecting wind, rain and snow in the next 2-3 days....should I wait until it warms up or just bite the bullet and trim them anyway?

I don't know where you live or what kind of hydrangea but most don't need trimming but every couple of years in the fall, after they've bloomed out

Don't lay a blade on it.  Leave it alone!

Is it a big leaf hydrangea or an oakleaf one? Is it being shaped? You will lose blooms if you are pruning these 2 types. I wait till mine leaf out & remove any dead stems then.

Sun loving hydrangeas like paniculatas or arborescens can be pruned now because they bloom on the current season’s wood and not last year’s like the big leaf or oakleaf ones do.

We, too, are expecting rain/snow over the next few days.

***I am new to this (hydrangeas) so was interested in your post.  I cut back the first spring and felt it stunted any growth and I had virtually NO blooms to speak of that year.

Following the advice of @fthunt and I'm not touching them : )

Hydrangea....Vanilla strawberry Paniculata.....this is the type of plant that I have....so very pretty.  Last year it was very overgrown.....if I don't trim now can I trim AFTER it blooms this summer?

Trim now if you want, but it blooms on current season’s growth so you won’t be removing buds. You can prune after it flowers too. I would prune in late winter (now) or early spring to shape it back again.

@JustJazzmom. Thanks so much...the flowers are just beautiful.  I guess I did not read close enough to the size of the plant....it gets big...but oh so pretty.

@Mom2Dogs, I have a couple of vanilla strawberry hydrangeas.  The oldest one is 10’ High by 10’ Wide.  I absolutely love it.  It is very striking and has room to grow where it is located.  One of my favourites.  Good luck!  LM
