Hummingbird feeders

My feeder gets a little sunlight around noon but is mostly shaded by trees. It is on a shepherd hook out in the open with geraniums & petunias nearby. In the last two days I have seen the birds on both of the flowers. My question is does the feeder need to be completely in the sun or shade?
