The tree looks fine. One of the many subtleties of the Jap maples is leaf coloration and texture.
CQ will not resemble Bloodgood.
And yes, anytime a tree is moved, the risk of loss is enhanced. Keep an eye out, as you have been doing.

@Sweetbay magnolia, thank you! I am feeling better about it. It looks much better than a week ago. I hate to move trees. We talked to the nursery before we did it and followed their advice. Hopefully it will settle in well. LM

@Lilysmom Sorry I've not gotten back with you on your Crimson Queen, my husband and I are talking about your tree this morning.
Here's what he said - first, are the 2 places (old and new) both similar with sun amounts? A tree this size will go t hrough some shock in the transplanting. He also couldn't tell if it looks grayish from potential mildew or not. He also said you should thin it out a little. As well he said to watch if it begins to lose leaves, it may just because of the move but it'll or should leaf out again. May be too soon to tell anything really so just keep an eye on it.
We also have a Japanese Maple in our front yard. Love these - obviously you and your DH do too!
Keep us posted. Happy gardening this year!

@PINKdogWOOD, thanks so much for consulting with Mr. Pink. I appreciate all the feedback and I will keep watch. The tree is looking better every day thank heavens. I cut back on watering since we have had a wet spring. We are getting another 30 mm Friday so I am holding off watering til then. It looks much fuller and is more the colour I would expect.
I will post more photos this week so you can see. LM

I'm just surprised you were able to transplant it. I lost one a couple of years ago and replaced it this year with a Bloodgood, but digging out the old tree was a bear. I ended up having to just saw through some of the roots including the tap. Good job.

@Icegoddess, DH is pretty good at moving things, trees included. We did the move while the tree was dormant. He had the new hole dug before we disturbed the tree. We mixed good compost in the new soil.
Just had a big rain yesterday. The tree looks very good now. I will post some photos in the next few days. We have quite a bit more colour now.
I love the Bloodgood. I have 6-7 around the yard. They are one gorgeous tree!
