Has anyone started their cool weather crops yet? Radishes, onions, lettuce, peas?

I'm in zone 6b, and March is the time! This year I'm just doing some container lettuces with a radish or two for companions.

Not yet, but soon.  There's an old belief that you need to get your Peas in the ground by St. Patricks Day so they'll be ready for the Traditional Salmon and Peas on the Fourth of July.

@Harpa I'm afraid SE Pennsylvania is going to be late to the party this year. Ground is still too soggy. Goodness, the daffodils are just poking through!

Re: Cool Weather Crops?

[ Edited ]

I planted on the 21st in 2 of my containers, and we have not had the best of weather by any stretch. But the radishes have sprouted this a.m.!

Netting was purchased to discourage the bunnies. (They are living under our shed.) And I have the containers in my Agricart. (Supposedly, so I've read, bunnies can't hop up that high.)  Those bunnies! We had a pet mini lop, who had no problem hopping up as high as my daughter's dresser!

I used to till and tend an extensive vegetable garden, where cool weather crops were about 1/3 of it. I hope I can make a salad out of my container crops!

I've had one rabbit figure out how to hop over the 13" rabbit fencing around my rose garden & one content to sit next to the grass by that fencing.

Haven't seen lettuce yet for sale in HD or Lowe's yet. Maybe tomorrow I will visit them. I have in the past bought a basket of lettuce from Lowe's & then separated them to plant individually.

Look for small Asiatic lilies in the stores too. But when you plant them, the rabbits will go after them too. Put fencing around them to deter them.
