It's a fashion term. Probably coined long before QVC. When going out for the evening, it's styling yourself to showcase what people will see when you are sitting at the table.

Thanks for the shoutout @Danky2 . It is an old old term: Table Top dressing like others within have stated.

It may be an old term, but it is very relevant today. I dress "table top style" every day as I work from home and and in virtual meetings every day (nice on top and pj bottoms or jogger pants on bottom with Birkenstocks).

Last night during the jewelry finale Amy complimented Scott Grimes on his blazer. He mentioned she's only seeing the top of him. She then asked him if he was in his underwear. It was pretty funny, but probably in that "you had to be there" kind of way.
