I got laid off 6 weeks ago and am starting a temp job tomorrow that has strong potential to become permanent if we think it's a good fit (yay me!).  I'm working through an agency and have never been to their office.  The agency says the dress code is "nothing more casual than flip flops".  I can't imagine what anyone might wear to work more casual than flip flops.

What would you wear?  The skirt, blouse, cardigan, and heels I was planning now sounds a bit formal.  I've never even worked anywhere we could wear open toe shoes.  I'm thinking about swapping out dark wash trouser jeans for the skirt I was planning, but I'm feeling weird about jeans.

Am I overthinking this?  I feel like I'm finally getting off an emotional roller coaster and am really excited for this opportunity.

Is this an office job? I've always felt that it's better to be overdressed than under. I would go for a nice pair of slacks with a dressy short sleeved top and casual jacket and flats. That way you look nice but are in the middle of the road for fitting in. You want your supervisor to see that you care about your appearance and want to project a good image in your working environment. And good luck.

@RollTide2008. IMO start out on the safe side w/ neutral slacks, blouse or tee, add a scarf or necklace and a pair of flats. After you see what others are wearing, you can adjust accordingly.

I would think being a bit over dressed on the first day would be appropriate. You'll see how everyone else is dressed and adjust accordingly going forward.

Better than being underdressed.

Good luck and congrats on the job. You must be so relieved.

Congratulations!

I would feel safe wearing black pants and a nice top.  Once you see what everyone else is wearing, you can make adjustments.

I would wear slacks with a nice top and flats.  Maybe a simple gold or silver necklace and a nice pair of earrings.

I would dress on the casual side of business attire.Slacks a nice blouse or tee & flats. Don't dress up too much.Last year my son went for a job interview in a very large distinguished firm.He wore a suit & tie.He was interviewed by several different people all of whom wore jeans. He was told that even though he had all of the qualifications for the job he would not be a good fit for their company. They said that his attire was an indication that he needed a more "structured environment "!!

A few weeks later he got a much better job where he was commended for his professional attire. He was told however, that business casual would be fine for most days.

  Good luck!!!🍀👍

If you are going to an office for the interview, dress for an office, even if this job is on a factory floor or whatever.  I second the slacks, nice top and flats ensemble.  Nix the flip flops under any condition.  They really bug some HR people.

Can I assume you are in the south?

A dress or skirt would be my choice, no trousers, no crops, no jeans, even the dressy ones.

No noisy jewelry, no strong fragrance.

Do you have dress sandals?   If you are comfortable in heels, wear them, but if you are not used to walking in them, better to have happy feet than to try to impress with something that's going to kill you.

Sorry you lost your other job.   Temping has its pro's and con's but when you need a paycheck, I'm sure it will be a blessing.

I'm assuming all this for an office job, not a warehouse or a job where you will be in & out and up & down all day.    You could ask the people at the temp office, they usually know their clients very well.

Best of luck!  RTR!
