I heard Tim Gunn this weekend giving fashion advice. First, he said designers are ignoring plus size women who make up the majority of American women and who will spend if given attractive clothes. He said he hated cropped pants. He said that separates provide a better fit than a dress. He advised against prints for the most part, said you don't want to look like a sofa. What do you think about it?

I didn't hear the interview.  I agree with most of what he said.

Re: Tim Gunn Radio interview

I agree with most of what he says, except short pants of some length are a necessity in very hot climates.  I like prints but not floral or anything that is large.  I think you have to chose carefully.

I wish he'd address the issue of horizontal stripes.  The D&C gurus would have us believe that they're not a bit unflattering but my eyes say they're lying.  Why oh why can't we have vertical stripes?  They're very common in menswear.

Re: Tim Gunn Radio interview

HE is batting 500 in my book.  I agree with him about the lack of quality Plus sized clothes and about separates giving a better fit then most dresses.  I love my prints.  DOes he think we should all wear solid colors all the time???  Boring.  AS far as cropped pants I don't hate them or love them.  I find them a necessity during the summer months.  NO one wants to see me in shorts and full length pants are not feasible in the hot steamy months. CRops fill the gap.

Re: Tim Gunn Radio interview

I agree with most of what he said. I have avoided all of the big flowery patterns because to me they look like old lady clothes and on me they look like old lady clothes and I'm not that old. Yet. Lace tops and dresses create an  "instant old lady look," too. I don't care if you tell me florals and lace are in or not. I'm not wearing them. Separates generally do fit better than dresses. No argument there.  Crop pants are not as flattering as long pants because they cut the leg off. Ankle grabbing shoes and boots are not as flattering as tall boots or as  shoes that hit the foot at a lower  spot because they cut off the legs, too. In spite of that, I do wear crop pants and capris all summer long because they're comfortable and we live on the water and I'm not about to run around in hot, long pants all summer. So there! You wear what works for your life and what you feel good in and forget the rest, right?

He said no large florals to overwhelm you and small florals are too juvenile, hard to find the middle path. I also like prints but only have two floral tshirts from Lands End that are botanical style wildflower.

Re: Tim Gunn Radio interview

I agree with him, except I love a printed blouse provided it is tasteful, and a small print on an ankle pant can be quite elegant. I watched fashion police last night. A first for me since JR passed, and back then I only watched an occasional snippet. I was floored that he was willing to "go out on a limb"  and state the obvious ... that certain styles of dress were "vulgar". Hell-O! Yes, it's true. Of course some of the others disagreed, but it was nice to know that there are still some in the business that have taste, and who know what that means. Of course his hair color was in stark contrast to the others, making me wonder if age is directly responsible for this position, as opposed to his maturity having led to a seasoned eye.

Seems like there is feeling held by most people now, that anything goes if it makes you feel good. Sure you can wear anything if it makes you feel good and there is no law against it, but  it doesn't mean that everything is tasteful. Some vestiges of standards are apparently still out there, and I for one, totally get that. And I'm glad someone with a pulpit isn't backing down from saying that there are boundaries.

I wear capri jeans or crop jeans in the summer. It's much too hot to wear long pants when the weather is hot outside. I also like print tops as they do a better job most of the time disguising back fat or a tummy. With solid fabric, especially in ITY polyester jersey, you really need to be careful to look at fit as that fabric can be unforgiving if the cut and fit of the garment is off.

Re: Tim Gunn Radio interview

I agree with him on most things. I would need to listen to the prints comment before I judge that. He has loved some prints on PR so I am not sure of the context of that comment. If he is referring to large realistic florals and tiny ditzy florals then, yes, I agree with that. I don't like those prints.  Wearing all solids can be a bit too boring for my fashion sense. A print can add some interest to an outfit if it is the right print.
