Well...I Googled "frumpy"...have to say a whole host of looks, both young and old come up...then this. I think we can all agree on this one. There were a few very sad "mom jeans" looks too. We may not all agree on how to describe it...but I think most of us know when we see it, or feel it on ourselves.

I think that's the same thing they say about pornography.

Re: The term “frumpy”....

IMO style has more to do with how you put outfits together from top to bottom than specific brands & pieces. I get a little tired of labels like “frumpy” being applied to women. I also dislike style “experts” telling women what we must wear or have in our closets. Thank goodness women have lots of choices now.

Interesting replies and thank you.

The reason I brought up the topic was I was at the retinologist's office and wore Linea dress pants and Jaque's floral commemoration blouse in black. My young physician kind of giggled after she told me I looked "bright and sparkly." The vibe was I looked like an older lady. The office was full of women in leggings and puffer coats. I wore a camel hair Brooks Brother's wool coat. I guess I need to do a wardrobe overhaul. LOL.

I just bought that Jac's garden blouse on clearance, in black. I would never call it "frumpy".

From your posts you always have exquisite taste and should not let the remarks of those women, or any women, make you question your taste or change it. Your clothes are an expression of who you are, and letting other people change that expression is a disservice to your self worth.

I completely understand, because sometimes remarks from other people can cut like a knife. Whether that's their intention or not. And I am sensitive to them.

I hate that word matronly too.

Re: The term “frumpy”....

I bet the doctor enjoyed seeing someone in something other than the usual leggings and puffer jacket, and just came up with the word "sparkly."  Just a nice compliment.

Frumpy, to me, is someone who looks like they take no care in their appearance.  A pretty blouse that may not be a current style, or pants that are several years old, can be very attractive.  It's all in the fit and how it's put together.

You certainly don't sound frumpy to me. Smiley Wink

Re: The term “frumpy”....

When I see someone at the grocery store in a oversized sweatshirt and pajama pants, no matter what their age, I call that frumpy.

Of course, I wouldn't be seen in an outdated polyester leisure suit. I didn't wear them back in the 1970's and I wouldn't wear them now even if they were in style.

When I hear the word frumpy, my mind immediately goes to the character of Amy on Big Bang Theory.

Uh-oh. I'm reading this thread "dressed" in PJs and somewhat old robe. Smiley Embarassed In my defense, it's still fairly early here.

I am a casual dresser. I wear skinny jeans and a sweater or nice tee pretty much wherever I go, which is nowhere right now. If I were to spif it up, I do have a few nice dress trousers. But no need at the moment.

You're speaking to me, as I sit here in my sweat pants, warm socks and my Comfy!

I just can't seem to get warm lately!

Annette, before

Something like this...maybe??? I always thought of "frumpy" as something it looked like you slept in and then went out in it.
