Just wanted to share my experience tonight on my way home as I had to stop at the mall and went to JC Penney's and another anchor store. Let me say that whenever I'm in a place where they sell clothing/shoes/food on shelves, I will always bend down to pick up something that someone has either dropped or taken off the rack when they bump into it, etc. So I did the same tonight.
A woman walking in front of me put a sweater back on the shelf (just tossed it) and it missed the shelf and rolled onto the floor. She turned and looked at it and then kept on walking. I made some sort of under-breath comment and picked it up. A sales person was standing near the dressing room doing whatever it was she was doing and watched it all happen. Move ahead to another aisle and there was a pair of pants that had come off the hanger - she said she'd seen it but I shouldn't worry about it because, "We have people to pick that stuff up at night." So....I thought several things - do they just not care? Why help the store with self-image, right? Lazy? Total lack of respect or responsibility? Diffusion of guilt for not doing it? I don't know but it just irked me (as a lot of things seem to lately). I'm only in my 40s so it's not like I grew up when my parents (who are early 80s) did, but they taught me right and I respect others even if they don't deserve it because it's the right thing to do. I feel if I let myself 'cave' and accept that this is the way it is....then I'm part of the problem too.
How does one deal with fighting a losing battle if this is what is acceptable? I think it hit me wrong because it's happening so often (things similar to this). If I don't give in to it, I'll be forever irritated because I'm swimming against the tide. I have patience and perserverance, but that's if I know there is a chance that it will change. Lately, I'm just waiting for that one thing that will reaffirm my faith in people.
