I am a very careful shopper when it comes to buying the right size.  I check the charts and also the reviews. And I usually get it right.   Shopping in local stores takes time and because I am a petite nothing is ever there, period.  Easier just to do the online thing.

I am on the lookout for a green pair of cargo pants.  My favorite brand among others is AnyBody. I have most of the colors... Because of the banded bottom I can buy both the petite and the medium versions and I am five feet tall.

My issue now is that I am losing weight and don't want to be stuck with the old size which is MEDIUM. I AM HOPING TO FINALLY GET BACK TO THE SMALL as a starting point.

I checked the label of my pants and noticed for the first time a list of sizes.  Crazy...

US  MP

UK  LP

IT    LP

FR   LP

 Made in China

Must be that we are larger people who identify with a smaller size.  No wonder sizes are very difficult to figure when products are made outside the USA. I dare not blame it on the metric system.

@bonnielu : I am also 5' and go by my hip size 34-34 1/2" and then length of 26". A lot of petite pants have too short a rise for me so I look for ankle or cropped pants in regular that give me that 26" inseam.

Whatever size those two wind up giving me is what I go for.

Looks like US large ladies prefer vanity sizing.

I have stayed the same size and started QVC in the early 90s.  My head spins, looking at you SG.

@Sadiesadie @bonnielu I need a 30-31-inch inseam although I am 5-4 (from a 5-5 in the good old days) because I have normaL rise and long legs.

I cannot wear regular fit.

God just chose to make me different from the mean.

After a recent purchase of several articles of clothing, a tailor/seamstress once asked me, during the measuring process, if I was born that way and I considered her question insulting so I answered "no," saying that I was in a wreck just before arriving there and decided I might need a plastic surgeon.  I picked up my articles of clothing, walked out of her shop.

Fortunately, for me, I found a tailor just as good and cheaper who did not insult people.

Trying to make us think we are smaller than we are.

When I lived in England, I was always aware that the sizes were different from U.S. sizes and the U.S. items were always referred to as vanity sizing.  For some reason, people here who are (for example) a 14 prefer to be a "12" or even a "10".  It makes no sense; you are the size you are, regardless of the label on your clothing.

As for size 0 or even 00...totally ridiculous.  If you're a zero, you don't exist!

Since most clothing is either made or sold internationally now, it makes sense to put all the sizes on the label.  Shoe sizes are also different abroad.

@bonnielu- I don't know whether you have a Kohl's near you, but they always have a separate section for petites.  The stores near me have always had a good selection.  Kohl's also offers its pants in what is called "short"; the rise is the same as regular, but the inseam is slightly shorter.  Those are perfect for me; no need to hem them.

Just always go by your current measurements; don't let a size vaildate you.

I laughed out loud because I thought you were joking....LOL   And then I realized that you really believe that the size on a label has some significance other than it being a size on a a label.  That's either funny or very sad.  The European and British sizes are different because their entire sizing system is different from ours.  Our M is not a M for a lady shopping with QVC in Paris.  The US "MP" is not about vanity....LOL    Just buy the size you know you wear now.  The...US size...LOL
