Re: Shopaholics ODAT---Saturday

Kathleen: I always love going out for breakfast. I enjoyed the visit with you and Steve. It is raining here now---don't think it will last long--but anything is welcome!.

I am sure your friend enjoyed your visit. Going to the hospital (for me) is difficult. But I know he appreciated it. 40 lbs is a lot---but he has been through a lot also. Wishing him the best.

Oh the granddog!. He sounds lovely---I know he do well with you.

Jean: thank you for posting the picture---I also saw that one on Facebook and it was moving. Four years ago I attended a ceremony at the cemetary honoring the children of the fallen. There were a number of people there and by the end I don't think there was a dry eye in the crowd. Even the crusty veterans were wiping their eyes. Very moving. I always enjoy being at events when they bring in the flag and all the veterans pop up and stand ramrod straight to salute the flag---no matter how casually or dressed up they are.

LindaL: Graduation ceremonies are wonderful events but they can drag on. I am sure your family was worn out by the end---ready to get out of there!

I know the highway patrol are very busy on these holiday weekends. I know a retired trooper and these holidays everyone worked---no time off allowed. Even the brass were on the road.

How nice that your cemetaries allow plantings. The one where my DH is buried has very strict rules---they post a list of dates and if the period of time between Thanksgiving and Christmas they have wreaths and allow more items. My mom and dad are buried in the major cemetary in Austin--No plantings are allowed but sometimes the items need to be removed after being weatherbeaten etc.

A good night's sleep is wonderful.

LindaR--Your comments about the children of the fallen reminded me of something few people know and it involves the survivors of the USS Arizona which was sunk on December 7. Many of those who survived requested that when they died that they be cremated and their ashes returned to be entombed with those who did not survive and remained entombed on the Arizona. Each year on or near Memorial Day, Navy divers will take any cremains and return them to the Arizona.

I grew up participating in Memorial Day Services at the cemetary. Once we moved to Texas I never heard of them going on - of course I didn't know anyone buried at any of the cemetaries, here or in Iowa. But our babysitter was part of the Veteran's (what is the name of it -the families organization) and so we were there as well.

Just fixed Beloved hamburgers, fried potato and onions and corn AND gravy. I found some great corn in sauce Jolly Green Giant brand a real dark green pkg. It's delicous. He didn't eat all his food, I guess I used too much onion. lol

John Wayne movie on the TV and I'm fiddling with my phone. I cooked a couple biscuits for strawberry shortcake - that's how I grew up eating it. Down here they have special "cakes" for them. I don't like them (of course) lol.

What a lovely tribute to be have your ashes entombed with the fallen. I think I had heard of that--thanks for the reminder.

I think Memorial Day is observed in some areas of the country---and no so much in others. Unfortunately TX is the ""not so much"". I know the cemetary down the hill from me has an event each year.

Rain was very brief---promise of possible rain for the next week.

It's still thundering here. King seems a bit chuffed that he wasn't welcome up on the leather couch! lol Dh 'barked' at him. He runs off and I find him laying in the bathroom, a nice cool spot for him. Too cute.

This is going to sound corny - I went to 3 stores today - Kohl's, Office Max and Home Depot. You know women, we chit chat, especially in Kohl's. As I wished the few people I talked to a Good Memorial Day, I asked, do you have any military in your family? More often than not they said yes to which I replied - Please thank them for their service and sacrifice for me. Those simple words triggered the biggest, most genuine smiles I've seen in a long time.

There are times when you must speak, not because you are going to change the opposing side, but because if you do not speak, they have changed you.

Bird Mama: Thank so much for posting. My late DH was a Viet Nam Vet. He would always be surprised when someone would thank him for his service. I know several Viet Nam vets and they recounted their treatment upon their return home. We do owe our veterans thanks.

My Dad served in WWII. Six of my mom's seven brothers also served in WWII. A favorite picture is all the fellas in their uniforms in a row in front of my grandparents home. All have passed now---but they all proudly served.

Bird Mama, that is so sweet! I know on Monday I call my Uncles who served and both my brothers. Anytime I see folks in uniform I tear up. It's just the way it is. We can't even comprehend what kind of sacrifice they made.

Just talked to Mom, who did 20 mile trail rides with Dad and a group of local folks the past 2 days. It sounds like they had a wonderful time! Off to write a couple letters!
