Good morning everyone. Thought I would try starting the thread today, since I don't see one up and running yet, and I will be busy later on. I thought I had posted on yesterday's thread, but see I did not. I really just checked the boards a couple times throughout the day on Thursday, I did read the entire topic from yesterday this morning, again. Funny how I guess I imagined posting, lol. No shopping on my agenda for today other than a grocery store run later on this afternoon. I plan to stock up on canned tomatoes and extra pumpkin, as I have read these items will probably be in shorter supply due to the long running drought in some areas and too wet in other areas. Even if not in short supply, prices will become increasingly higher (and I use canned tomatoes in a lot of dishes all year round, so it won't be a bad thing to have on hand). I've been doing more work outdoors, when the high temps allow, clearing the side fenceline of overgrown honeysuckle vines, which grow onto and choke out trees if let go too long. I had one tree die and had to have it removed 2 years ago, since then I have been keeping closer watch. The vines actually belong to the neighbor across the fence, but I only clear my side of the fence and cut off the growth onto my trees. I explained to her (neighbor) what I was doing and showed her the dead tree completely covered up with vines when I first discovered it was dead (didn't want to start a border war, lol), she was accepting of what I was doing. This neighbor lady is sweet, in her eighties and I know she can't do outdoor work and I really didn't want to upset her at all. At any rate, I am about halfway down the fence row with half to go, then I will have my back yard looking good again. Then it's back to the front with trimming, weeding, etc. again. The fun just never stops, lol. I did take it easy the day I had the tooth extraction, by next morning I was back at it again. Had zero problems with that whole process I am happy to say. This post is really long considering I had nothing to say, really. So, hope everyone has a great Friday. Waving to everyone.

Hi Snicks, thanks for getting us started this morning. It started raining here last night and continues to do so in an on again, off again fashion. We might get some storms later. The forecast for this weekend is 92 degrees on Saturday and 89 on Sunday. Maybe later, as the hot weather rolls in, I'll look up to the sky and tell Mother Nature she made a wrong turn and that it was Jean in West Virginia that wanted the hot weather ![]()
My neighbor has a honeysuckle (tree/shrub?) that likes to come across the privacy fence (it's at the end of the fence) and strangle my evergreen shrub. I don't know why she doesn't think she has to maintain it - she's a fanatic about her garden. We don't talk (won't bore you with details) so she probably lets it go to aggravate me (lol).

Hi friends! Snicks - thanks for getting us started. Hope you're able to get that honeysuckle pruned back. We have one in our yard and it does grow rather fast. Ours isn't close to any neighbors though. Not a bad idea to stock up on some low-priced food supplies. I have 10 tomato plants in my yard (drought here, so I kept it small). Some are eaten fresh, but I freeze a lot, and use them the same way I would canned tomatoes. I also make some tomato sauce.
DC update: Yesterday they missed their train from Rome to Naples, but caught the next one. That shortened their visit in Pompeii from 4 hours down to 3. My DD said that she thought Pompeii was "really neat" but they didn't have enough time there. Then they boarded a train for a long trip up to Venice. Halfway there, the train had a 2 hour delay due to some technical difficulty. They probably got into Venice really late. So, they're seeing Venice today. I'll post a photo on Facebook that my DS just texted me. I wish I was there. I love Venice.
It feels a little strange not to be working on a "project" - like sewing or something. I have more time on my hands. But it's nice, because I'm getting caught up on some reading, and watching some programs that have been on the TIVO for a long time. Have to make a run to the grocery store too.
Wave to everyone! ~ Charlene

Good Morning! Thanks for getting us started, snicks. Sounds like you do a lot of yard work. I don't do much here most of the time -- just pull the weeds out of the stones, take care of my plants, and occasionally trim the bushes. But, then again, I don't have all your greenery. I remember honeysuckle invasions from next door in Maryland. I just cut the parts on my side of the fence since talking to the neighbors didn't work well. One set was Hispanic (and ended up abandoning the house), and the other was Chinese/Indonesian (lots of people only a couple of whom spoke English). I do like the smell of honeysuckle, but it does kill off some bushes and trees if it gets too invasive.
Thanks for the information about the tomatoes and pumpkin. I have plenty of pumpkin (went crazy last fall/winter), but I certainly use lots of canned tomatoes. So, I should probably stock up a bit. I have been trying to reduce my supplies since I can be somewhat of a food hoarder, but maybe if I confine myself to tomatoes....
Sorry you are headed into too warm weather for you, Bernie. Jean is from West Virginia, but you are right -- she loves hot weather. And, she doesn't even mind hot and humid weather.
Waves to Barbara -- glad you have some nice neighbors. Enjoy the pool, and have a fun trip to Hawaii.
So sorry about the terrorism in your town, Arlene. I saw pictures of the shopping center where I think your Italian restaurant is located. I am so upset about the loss of those Marines. God bless their families and friends.
That is so weird about your shoes -- hope that is the end of your shoe problems -- three pair in one day, yikes!
Waves to Jean, Kathleen, twinny (hope your mini vacation was fun), pinky ann, Marijane (I purchased a used book that came from the Fairfield Woods Library, in Fairfield, CT -- is that near you?), Rosa, Susan, LindaR, Charlene (sorry your kids didn't have more time in Pompeii, but hope they enjoy Venice), Gayle, Karen, and all of our posters and readers.
We are expecting stormy weather here, but I hope to make it to COSTCO this morning and maybe the grocery store later. I managed to go to the gym yesterday afternoon, my plan is to go back to three times at the gym since no Curves.
I also went to a caregivers support group (for the first time) yesterday, and that was great. I am considering enrolling DH in an adult day program there at some point -- probably one day a week, at least to start. They have a great program to keep the attendees engaged, and the others in the support group said that their husbands enjoy it there (despite not liking it at first). All the other group members were female, and all but one had husbands enrolled in the day care program. All super nice ladies.
The strong bones workout yesterday went fine -- only two of us, and the other lady was good.
Have a nice day everyone!
Hugs,
Linda

Good aftenoon ladies, hope all is well,
Snicks - Thank you for starting us today. I didn't realize that there may be a ahortage of tomatoes in the near future. I use them for some reciepes and would be upset if I had everythig except the tomatoes, may have to buy a few extra cans of them. I don't use pumpkin for anything, not a big fan of it, unless it is in a pumpkin roll - well then I can eat the whole thing
Bernie - Sorry about the heat, we here love the heat, we have only had two 90 degress days this summer and that was in May. I just think about snow and cold and I don't mind the heat. I think your rain is heading our way this evening,
Sydsgma (Barbara ??). - Glad you have good neighbors, and have fun on vacation. It's nice to look forward to one.
Charlene - Glad the kids are having a good time, sorry about all the delays, Take your day off and enjoy it.
LindaL - Adult day care for DH is a good idea - it may keep him active enough all day that he will sleep better at night. Good luck with bringing the idea up to him, If you are bored you can come and weed for me, my garden is just a mess. Haven't been able to get in it because of all the rain, you just sink into the mud.
Well not much going on here today, no shopping except for some new towels for the kitchen - I know, the excitment is too much. Well off to finish washing clothes, have a good day everyone.

Barbara - a trip to Hawaii in August - that sounds exciting!
Charlene - It's good to have some down time after being really busy. I know it can feel weird.
LindaL - I corrected my post and will tell Mother Nature to take the heat to West Virginia :-) I'm glad to read that you enjoyed your first caregivers support meeting. Enrolling DH in a day program once a week sounds like a good idea. When my Ma was sick I often wondered if she was ever tired of always seeing me and my middle sister. Sometimes they just need to see different faces.
Susan - I love linens and get really excited when I can score new bath towels or kitchen towels on sale.
Marijane - I'm thinking of take out for dinner tonight too. I try not to eat much junk food and it has been a few weeks since I had a pizza ![]()

Hi girls, It's another hot day; I'm headed out to Sam's Club in a little while to pick up my free chicken before the coupon expires and return the "All Natural" flavored waters that contain that Splenda poison in them.
When I get home I'll get the small pool set up, as I haven't heard from the pool guy and at this rate, summer will be over before he gets here.
Bird, I know, it's really weird with the shoes - they're so cheaply made (and I do NOT buy cheap shoes) that the heat from being in the closet must cause the rubber or whatever junk they usefor the bottoms to disintegrate. Things sure aren't made like they used to be; I have at least half a dozen pair of classic shoes that I bought at a Bass outlet when I made a flying-from-place-to-place-in-Florida trip in 1988, and they're perfectly fine - still look like new.
LindaL, it's a good idea to take your husband to day care. When I lived on a mac nut farm in Captain Cook, my landlord (who lived upstairs and I had the large downstairs apartment) had a wife with Alzheimer's. He took her to day care five days a week, which gave him time to run the farm and do other things; he really adored her, and wouldn't think of putting her in a nursing home. My cousin in Florida recently started taking her 90 y.o. mother to a day care a couple of times a week; at first my aunt resisted, saying it was a place "for old people", but now she enjoys it - they have all kinds of special activities - last week was "cruise week," with make-believe shipboard activities every day. It gives my cousin time for herself; I don't think most people realize how exhausting being a caregiver is.
My front porch is covered with honeysuckle; I cut it back a little bit, but really apperciate that it covers that the porch rails need painting! ![]()
Barbara, Kauai is my favorite island as well, but I wouldn't want to live there unless I had a plane so I could easily visit the other islands. I had "rock fever" on The Big Island, and it's much larger! But oh, all those gorgeous waterfalls and rainbows....
Overnight, billboards have sprung up all over Chattanooga giving support to our military and police; there's a city-wide prayer scheduled for, I think, 8 p.m. tonight, with many churches participating. One of the injured victims is a young female sailor who's in very serious condition - last I heard she had gotten over 100 units of blood. So many people are donating blood that the blood bank had to extend its hours. Funny - but this is so much more real and emotional to me than 9/11, even though I lived in NYC for most of my life. Probably because I lived in Hawaii on 9/11, and to this day can't wrap my head about the Twin Towers being gone - they were so big it would take me longer to get to a visit with a client on an upper floor than it did to make my commute from Brooklyn Heights to lower Manhattan! (one subway stop)
Guess I'd better get moving; have a blessed day, everyone.

I purchased the book from Thriftbooks.com, Marijane. They sell used books from all over, but this was the first one that I ordered that had been from a library. It even had a pocket with a little card in the front like they used to have in the library. We just have scanners and bar codes at our library.
I wondered how large Fairfield was -- guess it isn't all that small of a town.
I don't know if Jean feels that way, but I know some West Virginians really want recognition that they live in West Virginia rather than Virginia, Bird.
I bought one of those rotisserie chickens at COSTCO for our dinner. Probably will make some risotto to go with it along with some vegetables.
Nice picture tribute, Arlene. I think I felt the same way when several people were gunned down in Tucson.
That is funny about those shoes that have lasted for years.
