Satin cowl necks, is there a secret to getting them to sit right?

I have fiddled around with the neckline, and can't get it to look good. I either get an asymetrical V neck, or a big bunchy blob. I'm sure there's nothing wrong with the cut of the top, it's just me. I've never been able to make cowls look right.

I'm probably going to use a brooch, but that feels like cheating.

Is there a secret to it? Is it just trial and error, and I haven't been trying long or hard enough?
