Peplum vs. Ruffle

[ Edited ]

There's a D&Co "top with peplum".

Denim & Co. Naturals Linen Blend Jersey Knit Top with Peplum - A379059

LOGO has a similar pieces and calls it a ruffle hem.  A302427

ETA:  I thought a peplum was something that was attached at the waist.

Wouldn't wear either of them.  Don't need more bulk around the hips--LOL!!

I'd call the Logo top more of a ruffle than a peplum.  Peplum usually start further up and gradually flare out.

@ALRATIBA

Neither qualify as a traditional peplum They misuse the term regularly!!

And as someone who loves a peplum I find it incredibly annoying!

they have structure, seamed at the waist and don't lay limply on your hips!

@Kachina624

LOGO does call it a ruffle.

D&Co calls theirs a peplum.

Whoever named the D&Co top needs to take some lessons!  Smiley Wink

@ALRATIBA

they do it all the time! Any piece with extra fabric at the bottom is a peplum!

I used to hear the designers correct the name applied but I think they've given up.....

I think you are right @ALRATIBA .  Not a big fan of either, but they are not horrible or anything.

@Andreatoo   That's also my idea of a traditional peplum -  no idea what I'd call the D&C top although it does look as if the trim starts higher than on the Logo top.

Given my figure, as pretty as a peplum top looks on some women, I own none..  Once in my life, I bought a jacket from Talbots with a peplum -  good material, well made, good color for me.  Wore it twice before I put it into a thrift bag.  It was one of those "What were you thinking" decisions.

I personally have decided I do not like peplum tops on me, so they better stick with the term ruffle.

The peplum suit jackets look divine on those stylish ladies in the photos!
