O/T - Calabria, Italy

I am going to Calabria, Italy in the fall for the first time. My Italian ancestors came from there about 100 yrs ago. Has anybody here ever been there before? Can you tell me what to expect and where to stay, things to do? Thanks so much.

My mother is from Calabria! I went there twice. It's a beautiful, mountainous region. Not sure which part you are going to. We were in a town called Gioia and it was right on the ocean. I can't give you advice on where to stay as we stayed with relatives and I haven't been back in about 20 years - so I'm sure much has changed. We did take the Ferry to Sicily for a day trip. There are many little villages in the mountains that are very quaint with unique shops, etc. I didn't find a "big city" type atmosphere. It was very relaxing. If you're going with a tour I'm sure they will help you out more or look up online. Sorry if I wasn't much help but I will be anxious to read about your trip! Have fun!

My family is from San Giovanni in Fiore. We will try to stay there, if possible.

Oh my gosh dfyre - my parents are from the same regions as yours! dad from Calabria - mom was born in Naples.

My family settled in Rochester, NY. All my aunts and cousins still live in Calabria. Only my mom and dad came over. Have a great time!

My brother in law comes from Corigliano. It's a beautiful little town near the mountains and the sea. I went there many times before he and my sister relocated to Arizona. We went to the beach a lot. You need beach shoes because there is no sand, only pebbles. We picniced in the mountains. Fields of flowers, quaint shops. Many beautiful memories. Slow pace, relaxing. Prepare for late suppers and lots of vino. ENJOY!
