I don't buy outfits. I buy pieces that go with everything else I have in my closet.

I tend to wear simple outfits - jeans, a nice top, a jacket, a great handbag, and nice shoes.

I tend to stay in the same color palatte so everything goes with everything.

I feel the same way. There was a time when I would buy items, and be lost with what to wear them with. Especially short jackets. I have also been more mindful before I hit the purchase button.

My closet right now is a mess of things that just hang there. Cannot wait for fall, the best time to dress in my opinion. I will clear all my mismatched stuff out before my fall clothes go in.

I fell for that 'build a wardrobe' line that I heard on QVC. And indeed build is what I did. Building and building my credit card debt ! Until I finally came to my senses and now do my best to try to live by way of the recommendations mentioned in this thread.

I buy single pieces all the time, but when I do I know they go with other things in my closet. When I buy a print or solid top I know it will go with at least one of my pants, skirts, or jeans since those are all neutral colors. I still have too many clothes, but I have pared down my wardrobe over the last several years so everything is in one closet and 2 dressers. I am also a smarter shopper, but I still have moments when I make bad purchases. I don't think I would want to limit myself to a small capsule collection. I would miss the variety of having different pieces and looks.

That's the bottom line advice in Linda Dano's Looking Great book I mentioned above. I can mix and match everything in the closet.

@Bri36 I do have the color palette correct I have a real color palette in my colors of Soft Summer and they are interchangeable. I don't wear black my neutrals are gray, navy, white, and a little sand.

Keeping to fewer colors is helping me greatly get my wardrobe in order.

The best advice I've read on this board is from a woman who wrote that she only buys black or things that go with black. I totally do that now for fall/winter. But I do wear blue jeans, too, and everything goes with jeans. For summer, I have khaki and navy as my basic colors, because frankly I get tired of the black by the time summer comes. I live at our lake house in the summer and don't bring anything black here. Then by fall I am ready for black again.

I do have to be careful not to be tempted to buy something new to go with some old thing in my closet. I just need to get rid of the old thing if I don't already have something to go with it.

Oh, and by the way, it is etc., not ect. Etcetera.

@Squirrel Lover, I am retired so I no longer need work clothes; however, you can still build a wardrobe and you can still purchase that pretty blouse you like. Say you have a pair of nice black pants, they can be mixed with all types of tops. Tees, blouses, sweaters. Get yourself a nice black cardigan and if you don't like black get charcoal gray. Then get charcoal gray pants or a skirt whichever your prefer (you can always wear opaque stockings in fall/winter). Most of your tops will go with both colors. I have a couple of black cardigans, an off white one too. I wear a lot of jean type pants, I say that because they are pull up pants from Walmart under $20 (don't laugh). They feel like cotton but I believe they are polyester and something. Your basics are black, charcoal gray, brown, off white, navy and then you build your wardrobe around it. You can also wear the blouse out to dinner with friends.
