I have a much simpler question

[ Edited ]

Our social event of the year in my small town is taking place during the month of March.  It is a Gatsby get-together.

Can I wear a black, short, tight skirt with a low-cut black blouse, several strands of pearls, black fishnet stockings and teacup heel and look like a flapper (I have the right haircut).  I will wear a 1920s gold and blcak flapper headband with rhinestones.  Will that look flapper enough or do I need to buy a dress with fringe or a long dress with sequins like a mother-of-the-bride dress.

Re: I have a much simpler question

I have been to 20's style fashion parties before and no, I did NOT buy a fringe dress, because when else would you wear it?

In fact, Issac M. has a very nice fringe dress for sale right now on QVC, A620721, and I was somewhat tempted to purchase when it first went on sale at such a low price, but I resisted--not because the price wasn't great, but because it would just be in the closet hardly worn. (I go to that type of party once a decade or so. Usually I wear a great dress I bought on HSN from Sheryl Crow--mesh overlay with sparkles. BUT I can also wear it to regular dressy events).

My grandmother was actually a flapper, and I would say the dresses were a bit more midi than mini, but you should be okay with dark stockings.  Other options to consider--a fake feather boa, almost elbow length black gloves, a long lace/sparkle overlay jacket or dress to wear on top of your outfit.  I would also go with a little more drama for your headband--maybe a center feather sticking up under a big jewerl?  That was also a very popular look.

Have a fantastic time!!

@Nonametoday sounds like it will look great. The hem length of dresses and skirts were not short back then at all but its one night and it sounds like you have the gist of look just fine.

HAVE FUN!!!

@Nonametoday   Flappers did not wear short tight skirts.

@Nonametoday  I love this thread!  I think your outfit sounds just fine.  We are going on another river boat cruise in April and they are having a Gatsby night too.  I went on Amazon and bought a few things for me and DH.  I have enough sequin tops so I'm just going to wear a Teal color one and I got the flapper in teal and black, pearls, the long black gloves, faux cigarette in the holder and fancy teal earrings........all this and black leggings.   DH has the garters for his shirt sleeves, suspenders, faux cigar and gangster hat.  I'm looking forward to it, should be really fun and I hope you have a great party Smiley Happy

What you have in mind sounds fine. The other accessories mentioned will add to the look too.

If you're interested in buying a flapper dress though Amazon has a bunch that aren't expensive.  Would be a great Halloween costume too.

Sounds like a fun event - have a great time!

Everything but the bolded part should work fine.

Re: I have a much simpler question

Thank you all so much for your responses.  I don't think I said it right about the short, tight skirt.  I just meant, a skirt that was not maxi or midi length, about knee length.  They did wear low-cut tops but I can't get too low, otherwise my "faux" boob will show (LOL).  That might be the talk of the evening.

You all have some great responses. I love the idea of a colorful dress or two-piece.  I am ON MY WAY TO THE AMAZON forest of Gatsby.  Thank you all for the suggestions.  I never knew there was a whole area for that (that is reasonable for a one-night wear).
