Re: How to handle compliments...

@CamilleP I was born in '48 and went to Catholic schools for 12 years and NO I was never "taught' to be ashamed of getting compliments!

Re: How to handle compliments...

Whenver I wear anything embroidered or something unique I get compliments from young & old.  I always feel so good when I do get them and just say thank you.

Re: How to handle compliments...

I have a pair of embroidered Chicos jeans from a few seasons ago, and now I expect to get compliments when I wear them.

I was wearing them in a crowded airport once and a woman going the other way in the aisle shouted out "love your jeans"!   I say thanks, sometimes tell people where I got them, though they're no longer available.

@CamilleP @Could be all of that. Being Catholic definitely (I am too). I think we don't want to appear vain because we see vanity as a flaw. It can definitely be a disconnect when you love clothes or a certain style. But I'm with you. It's hard but I'd have been happy to get the compliments! Maybe also it's validation of taste especially if t was something expensive.

I say thank you and they get into a long conversation.  I am a chatterbox and love to talk to people even strangers.

Oh, I definitely said "thank you".    And I will definitely wear those jeans again, I have a pair of Quacker Factory knit jeans from years ago that have snowflakes and flurries embroidered all over the legs, with rhinestones as well, so I was looking for something autumnal, and I found it in the Driftwood brand.  I mostly wear dresses or capris in the warmer months, but I do love jeans and sweaters in the fall and winter.  Tagging another thread in this forum, I do think these nominally "regular" inseams are at least an inch or two too long, and I'm 5'7'!  I may have to hem them up, and let some of the embroidery disappear.  Woman Sad

Thanks to everyone who's chimed in, I guess only some of us were a little "squashed" during our formative years, and I most certainly hope, going forwards, that all girls are taught to step forward and speak up, and take a back seat to nobody.

A simple thank you and if you want you can say you got them on QVC or wherever.  That's what I do.  I bet you looked good in those jeans!

Re: How to handle compliments...

Another side of this is that I think it's so cool that you received those compliments! Not that you didn't fully deserve them, (I'm sure you did!) but over my almost 58 years of living, I've seen so many women that seem to find it really hard to compliment other women. I guess it's a competitive thing?? I don't know, but it's just something I've noticed, maybe because as an elementary school teacher, I've always worked with mostly women. Anyway, I like giving and receiving compliments. Smiley Happy
