I have a similar shape, something in between an hourglass and a pear shape. I find that drawing attention to my top half, and away from my bottom half makes my figure look more balanced. I stick with plain dark colored bottom pieces. My tops are more brightly colored, and I enjoy prints, including the occasional horizontal stripe. I agree that your own individual shape often impacts whether a particular look will work on you or not.

If the stripe is narrow and there isn't much contrast in color as in the yellow and white shown above, you can get by with not appearing larger but wide dark stripes on a light color don't do anyone any favor. I'd disregard anything someone like Linda says...she's a salesperson.
