Help - Question about Petite Sizing

I don't like maxi dresses as I like some of my leg showing, do not like that smothered look in the hot summer. I am tall and was wondering if I bought a maxi in Petite is it only the length that is shorter or is the top (shoulder to waist) also cut shorter. If it is only the length than I will start buying this style in a Petite. Thanks!
