Has anyone dyed clothing with Rit dye?

Seeking your advice and experience before I make a mess!

I want to dye black a pair of faded gauze pants that I wear casually because gauze pants that do NOT have pockets are almost impossible to find. Anyway, how to do it? I hope not in the washing machine! Will a bucket do? I need step-by-step directions.
