Garment Size chart....need help

I am wondering if I am using the garment size chart correctly. .

When I look at the garment size chart for a top I look at the size and the measurements for the chest, waist and the bottom swing. If it matches my measurements or comes very close I size up one size because I don't want the top to be to small or tight. However sometimes the one size up is really too big and then I don't know what to do.

Now to counter that....When I order Denim and Co Pull on Pants A43881 I go down a size for a better fit. In most pants I go down a size.

I am only using the top and pants as an example! I have also noticed lately that some of the measurements have changed along with the lengths. Has any one else noticed that?

I hope this makes sense.  Am I using the garment size chart correctly since I know I am not using the general size chart correctly.

Thanks for your help!

@Silverfox1

You're probably better off checking the garment specifications given for the specific item you're considering. That will give you the specific measurements for that garment. HTH

@Texasmouse

Agree with you on using the specific garment measurements.  Also, when doing this I also consider the fabric type.  Basically if it has any stretch, that helps me decide if I stay in the smaller size or bump up one size.  I never look at the regular size chart as each item has such different measurements in the sizing numbers or the S-M-L-XL, etc.

I know which areas I prefer to have a little more room and which areas I don't. So while I check all the basic measurements I know which ones to prioritize for the fit I like.
