"smart watch" for kids and adults question

So many brands of watches out now. I am NOT tech savy.  Do they all need to be connected to internet or phone to work?  I mainly want to track steps.  How do you set up and can they be used with a Tracfone?

Many do not require internet.  Many connect with a phone via Bluetooth.  Some require a cellular plan to connect to a phone.  Some work with Android and some with Apple.  Could be there are some stand alone?

 

Perpahs you could start the investigation with your exact phone and budget?

 

I even have a family member who likes distance running - whee a whole different watch.

 

Most of the grandkids have tried FitBits and abandoned them.
