I had a terrible incident today.  I logged on an started to go to a message board, I did not make it to the site.  Got a loud error screen that says a virus may be on my computer and to call xxx 800 number.  Plu you hear a loud error message in a lady voice about be careful shopping on line an I had to turn off the computer to stop the message.

I did not call he number and my computer was "supposed" to have virus protection.  Anyone who can explain or give tis or experience please please share.

You may not have a virus, yet. That message could have been a lure to get you to click on something that could add malware (unwanted programs) to your computer. If it reappears, then yes, you may have a virus.

DO NOT call that company or give any credit card info to any online virus protection that you did not seek out on your own. That message is basically blackmail.

Did you see anything that asked you to update one of your programs recently? Like a flash player update? That might have added the virus.

At any rate, try downloading a program called malwarebytes. It can scan your computer and may help fix any infection.

My husband had a similar experience.  All of a sudden a screen popped up, telling him he had a virus and to download their program.  THEN OUR PHONE RANG!  It was the same scam artists that (somehow) popped up the "virus" screen on his computer.  They said they could help us... they "were from Microsoft," etc.  I eventually hung up.

We turned off his computer and turned it back on.  Then (just in case) I ran malwarebytes (free from malwarebytes.org) and let it scan the computer.  No virus.

I have no idea how someone can do this, but we're living proof that it was done to us.  Someone, somewhere, can pop up a screen on your computer monitor and THEN KNOW YOUR PHONE NUMBER and call you?  What's next?!

This is a scam. It happened to me a few yrs ago while looking for dog food recepies . After clicking on it I couldn't do a darn thing with,my computer untill I ordered thier softwear. Luckly I found out it was a scam right away. I called my  credit card to stop payment  and they knew exactly what happened .

I did have to get my guy that fixes computers to restore everything.

I don't understand how this is possible, but I turned off the computer, it make me wonder if a lot of these virus protection items even work.

When you get something like that on your computer just shut down and restart the computer and the problem typically goes away. They're more of a persistent pop-up ad than a virus. Don't even try closing it, or doing anything other than shutting down and restarting. That will nearly always solve the problem.

Yet another SCAM, POP UP, or whatever. Royal pains.  I went to a site yesterday to see what some of you had described as The Next Shirley Temple. When I clicked on the site, I got a pop up that i had some perfectly awful virus - should call a certain number.  My computer froze up. Had to call Apple to get rid of it.  (Bonus grandson, a former Apple Tech was here and he couldn't solve it.) The Apple Tech had to delete a ton of things before we got it working again.

I'd still like to see that video from America's Got Talent, but when I tried to go there again the same thing happened. I know it's not the site - it's a pop up somebody stuck on my computer. I went back thru the things Apple told me and got rid of it so far.

I had it happen one day when I came HERE.  There are some problems with this website that make it, among other things, vulnerable.

Anyway, I hope you didn't click on ANYTHING or respond in any way.  As you know by now it's a big ol' scam.

After that happened to me I made sure everything was up to date and ran scans to make sure my computer was clean.  The only way I had to get out of it was to turn off my computer and back on.

It was freaky and especially when that woman's voice came on.  yikes!  But at least my phone didn't ring.

This website IS problematic and has frozen up my computers more than once since the roll-out of the new board.    I'm not a techie person so I don't know exactly what the problem is, but I am certain that it has been this website.

Oh My, the same thing happened to my MacBook yesterday!  I have found that when a link includes pop-ups, it is one to stay away from, but how does one know ahead of time?

Thanks everyone, I did not call the number but just turned off the computer.  It was upsetting.  I appreciate all the comments.
