mini ipad cover help

I purchased the ipad mini from the Apple Store and ordered a smart cover for it. But looking at it, it doesn't cover the back and I am thinking I should have ordered the case instead. Is there anything available to cover the back of it that is compatible with the smart cover? Does the back really need to be covered? Should I just send the cover back and get the smart case throught Apple? Also thinking of getting ear buds, are there any recs for those out there? Thanks for your help.
