microsoft security essentials

I work on a computer all day long but am still computer challenged

I do not have Microsoft security essentials installed on my laptop

I have vipre and have had no issues.

Microsoft window updates last night - took a little longer to get logged in today but once in no issues and then all of a sudden got a microsoft security essentials red warning that I had dangerous trogans, viruses, etc etc. Could not close the warning but went into every location I could think of to check and could not find microsoft security essentials downloaded on my computer. Went into vipre and did a quick scan which located and cleaned lots of low level risk cookies but nothing about trogans or anything "critical".

I plan on running a deep scan tonight but was the Microsoft Security Essentials a "scam" since I don't have it loaded or could it be there but I just can't find it?
