memory card question.

I have googled everything and can't find an answer to my problem. It's probabaly very simple to fix to all of you so here goes:

Whenever put the memory card from my camera into my laptop I have no choice other then to import the pics from the card. So all of the photos on the card always download. Even the photos that I already have in my laptop. Is there any way to select just the pics that I want to import instead of all the repeat photos that I have to delete after the import?

I can't erase the memory card because I am going to share this card with other members of my family so that they can also have these photos.
