You can block a number.  Go to the picture of the phone, then go to contacts then at the bottom where it says recent, click on that.  Then click on the " i " by the phone number the caller used....Be careful to just click on the i   it's for information.  Then scroll down to the bottom and it says "BLOCK THIS CALLER"  now click on that and they won't be able to call or bother you anymore.

Come back and tell me if it worked.  I have an iphone 6 and I do it all of the time.  If you mistankenly block someone it's easy to "UNBLOCK" them.

Just be careful to touch the i so it doesn't call them back.

@traveler,  If the problem is the occasional pop-up when you use the browser, first close the Safari app running in the background (here are the directions for that:  https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201330).   Then go into your Safari Settings and block pop-ups.  Also under Safari, tap "Clear History and Website Data."  You might also need to tap "Advanced," then "Website data," then "Remove All Website Data."  (This won't affect your saved login info for the websites you use.)

If the problem is unwanted text messages, as @Annabellethecat66 said you can block the sender.   Also, however, I usually report them before I block them.

If it's an iMessage, I report it to Apple.    If it's just a text SMS/MMS message, I report it to AT&T.  (I don't know about report mechanisms for other service providers.)  Then I block the sender.    I'm guessing other providers have similar mechanisms.    Here's info for Apple and AT&T:

"Block phone numbers and contacts or filter messages on your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch"
