You learn something new everyday. I didn't realize iPhoto had it's own trash. I emptied it and will see if that helps. My iPhoto started loading slow about 2 updates ago as well. Maybe that's more of the problem than too many pictures.

edit: I emptied the iPhoto trash and it's working great. The program opens fast and is also fast downloading pictures from my camera. Thanks everyone.

That's great! Yes,the pesky iPhoto trash. Many forget about that. Then once you empty the iPhoto trash it moves to your Mac trash,which then needs to be emptied. I haven't experienced problems with a slow iPhoto, but I also don't store all my photo files on the Mac hard drive. I use an external for that. So maybe that is the difference? Let us know if emptying the iPhoto trash solved to problem.

I take a lot of photos of my flowers every year which accounts for the thousands I have on the hard drive. I do have several copies of everything and need to go through them and remove the ones from last year. With a 1 TB hard drive, it's easy to leave photos, movies and other data since you have the room.
