I was finding that my iPad was becoming sluggish after the install of IOS 14. I checked the memory and it was close to full. I did a big clearing out exercise which I found interesting. I got rid of many photos, stored important ones on a USB, cleared out apps I was not using, turned off background refresh on apps, adjusted my newspaper subscription so that it wasn't storing back issues (this app was a memory hog), did a hard reset and turned off Bluetooth. I now have 50 GB of free memory (out of 128),
While performance is better, Instill find it sluggish. Anyone have any ideas or suggestions. Did I miss something. Is it IOS 14? TIA. S aka Lilysmom

Go under Settings and the start with your first App. Open and turn Off Siri and Search. I found 4 things open on each app. This made a huge difference in my iPad after updating to version 14. I also turned off Location as I do not need to be tracked. IF needed for Maps etc it will pop up and you can turn on then. Always restart the iPad after this and see if it helps.

The best thing to do is reset and restore. Apps, updates music, and photos take up a lot of room even when they have been deleted. Backup your iPad to your computer or the iCloud, erase and reset, then restore from your backup. All of the junk or orphan files will be gone and your data/settings will be restored.
FYI, a friend had this problem with her iPhone. She didn't have enough storage space to do the latest update. We did a reset/restore, regained 8 GB of storage and when she did the latest update, her phone was out of storage space again. Her only option was to buy a new iPhone.
Another example of why you should always buy as much storage on a device as you can afford.

@glb613 , I take your point on storage. I may very well do what you recommend. I think I will wait until the quiet time between Christmas and the New Year and have a computer day. It shouldn't be this hard. The only thing here that makes me cringe is the music. I am pretty sure I will lose my playlists but that should be ok as they are stored on the MacBook Pro right?
Thanks for your feedback. S

@MKR14 , I shut off "Learn From This App" also. Did you do that too? S

Yes. I did shut that off. I forgot swipe to the Right on the main screen and on the Left it will open another screen. Get rid of what is open. I did. I believe you swipe up and they will be gone. These definitely take storage as they are always there if not deleted. This will cause no problem doing this.
Be sure you do Siri and Search on EACH app as it has as many as 5 things open under each one.

For both the phone and the iPads, I had to take the time to really, really go through the settings. Many changes.

The updates also have put Bluetooth before so be sure to check that also.
Enjoy your day and the faster iPad. Glad I could help.
I always check all of these things after any update.👍
UPDATE:
I just went back on my iPad and saw that under General-go down to "Siri and Search"and I had half of my Apps showing some had part of them on. This is one you want to check as well as the list of Apps from Music down listed below this. Now all mine are off for sure.
See by helping you it helped me too!
