iMac?

I need a new computer as my laptop is crashing and am thinking about converting from a PC to a Mac. I teach MS office applications on the PC and would like to know if I convert to the Mac, would I be able to open the lesson plans and assignments I already have. Also, are there major differences between the MS Office versions for the Mac and PC. A sales representative in Best Buy told me that I might want to get the Parallel software, is it necessary?
