I'm using my chromebook to type this. On my other computer, a HP one, the other day I went to use it and get the message 'install an operating system on your computer'. It suggested hitting F2, but the selections it gave me did not fix the problem. How does this happen - one day Windows 10 is working fine, and then the next, it asks me to do 'booting' and install the OS all over again. I've also hit F8, to do a system restore, but that doesn't work, and neither does F9, F10 or F11. Any help is appreciated. Thank you. Does this mean I need a new computer?

What if you went into the settings and went back to a date when everything was working right?

Sounds like a dead hard drive. I hope you have a current backup.

Have you tried contacting HP support to get help? I would do that. It is your best option.

Go to Microsoft dot com. Download it from there. If that's not possible b/c your system is down then you'll need to load it from a flash drive or disk which can be done using another computer. Once you get to load onto a flash drive or CD disk then you can just download it onto your crashed computer.

@Desert Lily , it won't let me do anything. Windows Operating System is totally gone from my computer. All the screen says when I turn computer on is 'bios system not found', install Windows operating system.

You're going to have to reinstall Win10 OS using a flash drive which contains the Win10 software. You can either buy that flash drive preloaded with it (not expensive) or you can load it yourself onto a blank flash drive (you buy one from a store) by using another working Windows PC or laptop, not a Chromebook. After you get the software loaded onto the flash drive then you can plug it into your crashed computer. It should load and then boot it into operating status. Google how to install windows 10 operating system from bootable usb flash drive.

The "BIOS system not found" is ominous. The BIOS is the "Basic Input Output System". It's the backbone of a computer. It's typically stored on a ROM (Read Only Memory) chip that can often be flashed to update the BIOS. It's possible that chip has failed.
Your OS (Windows 10) didn't disappear. It's likely still there. With no BIOS the computer just can't access it. I'd recommend trying to access the BIOS during startup to see if you can get into it. You can enter the BIOS during startup by pressing a certain key or keys repeatedly while the computer starts. I can't tell you for sure which key to press repeatedly while booting the computer as it can vary. Your manual should have that information though.
Many modern motherboards have a dual BIOS so you can switch to the backup BIOS should something bad happen. Once again, your manual should tell you if you have such a feature and how to activate it. Before you invest in a new OS you'll need to fix the BIOS issue. Once that's resolved, you'll likely find your OS is there and in good shape.

@gardenman and everyone - thanks for all the suggestions. I'm getting a flash drive thingy delivered today from Amazon - hopefully that will fix it. I'm not computer savvy at all. If it doesn't work, I'll get a new computer. Once again, thanks.

@gardenman , I tried for two days hitting the F2 key. It didn't work. I followed the rest of the prompts with no luck. Thank you for your help.
