computer question, or hook up question

Im probably what they call electronically challenged so please excuse me if I dont ask the question in a smart way but in a nut shell bought the dell notebook. this is my first notebook. I have a old dell desk top which is on dsl, well my question is what should I get to be able to use my new notebook, they said I need a wireless conection. Im not going to unhook my desk top, so do I need a router, or a wifi, or both, and do I get a computer person to hook those up or do I get the telphone ppeople to do it. Thank you
