As long as you are good with Chrome and Chrome alone. You cannot do anything with Windows or Apple.

If you use MS Word or Excel, it won't work on a Chromebook. Google has its own versions of that with Google Docs, but you will be starting from scratch.

Also, everything is cloud based and you must be connected to the internet for most things to work. Chromebooks don't work offline. They are usually not the fastest things on the block either.

If you have a stable internet connection and don't do a lot with Microsoft applications, it's a good alternative. You just have to know the limitations and if they will affect you.

Sometimes, it's a better value to just use a tablet or IPad that will work with everything. I think the most recent iPad is around $299 on sale so you might want to see if that might be a better bet for you.

And if you are married to a manual keyboard, you can get a cheap one to add to any tablet for not much more money.

Re: chrome books

I've had a chromebook for many years and highly recommend!

I thought when I first got one that they have designed this computer for me! Just what I would want in a computer.

I've had a Samsung and an Acer brand, both good.

They are easy to set up. I even did it by myself.

You no longer have to worry about viruses because it handles it all.

They are simple and easy to navigate without all the awful complications of regular computers.

You can get a great one for under $200, even a little over $100.

The only drawback I find which is probably the same as having to replace old computers is that every 5 years if you want your chromebook to have software updates from Google, including security and bug fixes, new features, you have to get a new chromebook from what I understand.

Still for $100 plus something every 5 years, it's worth it to me.

@qvcaddition,

When you update when it says and it's after 5 years, does it just keep updating? Do you ever get that notice of when the google software updates will expire?

I have before I got a new one. Mine is about 2-3 years old now.

Just wondering if that's changed?

Consider buying a Chromebook PLUS instead of just a CB. The PLUS offers a lot more storage and features you won't find on a regular CB. The PLUS is twice as fast as any of my older CBs. I recommend the Acer Chromebook PLUS 514. That's the fourth Acer CB I've owned except the PLUS is the first. I bought it for just under 300 but now they are around 350 but still a great price for what you get. I've been using my CB PLUS since April this year and I can't tell you how wonderful it truly is.

I loaded Microsoft's Edge browser onto my CB Plus. That is possible if you didn't know. It takes a few key strokes to get the thing to load and so now I have two browsers on my CB PLUS.

My Acer CB PLUS will update until June 2033. Eight years is a long to use a device. Five years is usually a good time to replace the old so I'm happy about the eight-years I have left with it.

@willomenia

How large is your HD (storage) and how much space do you have left?

How much RAM (speed) do you have installed?

Type "What to do when your computer is too slow" in your search engine & YouTube

Type "Speeding up your computer" --- same as above.

It does for me.  A notice comes up on my screen and says to update.  To close and sign on again.  I've had no problem, but then, I just use for email, and ordering on the Q or HSN and looking up different subjects to read. Utube, etc. So far working fine.

@qvcaddition ,

I always get the updates too and I do and it closes and I sign on again but I did get a notice last time of when updates would expire right before it was 5 years old.

Next time I'll keep using after the expiration date if it keeps updating.

Thanks for your infoSmiley Happy
