buying ipad for gd!

we have decided to buy our granddaughter an ipad for her 16th bithday in august. we are undicided on which one. we want to make sure it isnt obsolete in 6 months. we are leaning toward the one that doesnt require the service from att or verison. we want the one that will"grow" with her and have the most memory, etc. she will be able to use it in school as her school is now allowing their use. any thought & ideas, please?? nascar fan
