I do not suggest just buying any modem/router. But that process is rather simple and straightforward. Comcast has on its website a list of modems/routers compatible with its services. You review and choose one of them that works for your needs. They make that step pretty easy for you. Also, it is correct that another step in the installation process is contacting Comcast so that they can register your private modem with then. My primary overall point is that this entire process is pretty simple and the directions on how to do this are found easily on the web. I'm sure that just about anyone is capable of managing this task. Good luck to the Original Poster in resolving your issue!

I had their equipment for 6 months and after too-numerous-to-count attempts at having them disable my hotspot without disabling my wifi altogether, I returned their equipment, canceled the triple play and now am back to my old modem and router. No more hot spots for my neighbors in my condo complex.
My Linksys modem has a hotsopt setting and I was able to get into the settings and disable it. I'm sure if you got into the settings, by entering an address into your browser, you could disable it as well.

This!
When I signed up for Comcast, I bought the modem from Best Buy. Set up was very simple and I pushed a button to connect all of my devices.

I have the new modem for over 6 months now jut sitting in the box that it came in .... I will have to surrender and call Time Warner and pay for the installation.
Take a picture and then expand it on your phone/tablet/computer so you can read it.

What I did when I bought my modem:
compared the cable modems at Best Buy to the list of Comcast modems;
read the specs on the Best Buy modems to make sure they had what I wanted (wi-fi, push, speed, range);
read the reviews.
Make sure you read the reviews if you decide to get your own modem. One modem that was on Comcast's list no longer worked for Comcast. I found that out from reading the reviews.
Also, when I set up my modem, I didn't need to call Comcast.

The one comcast gave me was Arris and I know how to go to settings, etc., but that is not available. Anyway, like I said I no longer rent their modem/router and no longer have that problem. I do, however, have a separate "guest" setting for my router so I don't have to give my friends/family my password.

This is a video how to personalize your ARRIS modem. If this isn't the modem you have, go to Google, type in the name and model number plus settings and you should find similar information. If there is no option to disable the hotspot, there should be a way to password protect it so your neighbors can't use your signal.
A friend has triple play from Comcast, has their modem and I was able to disable the hotspot. I don't remember the exact steps but I had to get into the advanced settings as shown in the video.
