I received an email from Xfinity offering a new wireless modem . I can have one sent to me and install myself or they will install it for $50.  They said it is easy to install.  I was wondering if anyone got the new modem and installed it themselves.  Is it as easy as they say or not.  I am afraid to order one and not know what to do.  I think $50 is a lot to install it so I don't know what to do.

I got a new one from CenturyLink and installed it.  If you have any trouble, you can always call Xfinity's tech support.  You do do need to have your system's password.

You can just buy your own and install it and not pay a monthly fee. Wireless router too. If you look on their website, they will have a list of compatible ones.

you are correct $50 is a lot to install a modem it is just unplugging and replugging the cables and wires.

I am doing the same thing. The message they leave is  vague - something about making an appointment for an adjustment. I want to know exactly what they are proposing to do.  Until then, no dice.

I started getting the calls a few weeks ago.

Re: Xfinity new modem

Xfinity notified me a couple of months ago about the new modems.  I kept putting it off because I knew I could never install it myself and that I'd have to make an appointment for a tech.  About two weeks ago, I received another email advising that my system was no longer compatible and to have the new Gateway installed.  I called and made an appointment, the tech was here last week.  I told him my system was SO slow and he said no wonder, my software was SO old!  lol!  Anyway, glad I got a tech to install it and take away the old stuff.  Now my system is working a lot better and faster.  I know nothing about hardware, and I know I would never have been able to do what all he did.

I ordered and received my new modem from Xfinity about a year ago.  It was easy to install myself.

i wish I still had my old unit.  The new one is a router and modem all in one.  It is slower tham my old modem and the router that I had purchased myself  a few years before.  And the  thing that really ticked me off is the fact that my home is now a hot spot for everyone who has an Xfinity subscription.

I complained to Xfinity. But it was of no use.    If you have an xfinity subscription and need to find a hot spot just drive into a residential area.  Everyone who has xfinity in their home will share their service with you if they have the new modem.

i have had the same experience. The new set-up seems to have slowed down my system.  More significantly, a few people sit in their cars outside my rented townhouse and work on their tablets. Growl.  By the way, my installation-- about nine months ago-- cost only $39.

Carmie - call xfinity and have them check to see if your modem has the latest version of software.  We bought a new one about 2 months ago and we were having to reset it every other day!  finally i got sick and tired and called them.  they said it needed to be updated, even tho i just bought it!

good luck!
