Would you send your hard drive back?

My friend has the same Dell notebook I do. Her hard drive failed and Dell is sending her a new one under warranty. Then they want her to return her old hard drive to them. She is worried about all the personal information on it. What happens if she doesn't send it back? I can't imagine why they want it.
