Re: Windows 8.1 versus Windows 7

I've been using Windows 10 for about 3 months now. Hands down best one ever. True start button is back. No more tiles. Pretty awesome.

Re: Windows 8.1 versus Windows 7

Don't be afraid of win 8.1. It took me a few tries after looking around to figure it out and I had Win 7 for years. I would never go back. Just place your cursor in the upper left hand corner to take you to your desktop. The bottom left hand corner will take you to the tiles and to see all of them just hit your rt directional arrow. The tiles are convenient btw. If you place your cursor in the upper Right hand corner it takes you to Search, Share, Start, Devices and Settings. Also, the right hand corner will show you the white X to exit from the screen you're in. To change the look of your screen do the rt click on the desktop just like Win 7.

Right click in the bottom left corner to see a list of commands. I figured this out when I was trying to shut down my computer. The list of commands are: programs and features, mobility center, power options, event viewer, system, device manager, network connections, disk management, computer management, command prompt, command prompt (admin), task manager, control panel, file explorer, search, run, shut down or sign out and desktop.

Yeah google Windows 10 technical preview. Anyone can download it.

This software is at a beta test stage. It is not the thing for the average customer to download and use. You need to be very tech savvy.

Re: Windows 8.1 versus Windows 7

LOVED Windows 7. DETEST Windows 8.1. Some say, it'll get better. Um. No. It. Won't. However, touch screen makes Windows 8.1 somewhat tolerable. I definitely don't spend as much time on the laptop as I used to. And that's not a bad thing! One thing I learned is never buy a PC from a shopping channel. Read that over and over. Wish I had paid attention! Couldn't ship that POS back fast enough!

Re: Windows 8.1 versus Windows 7

I purchased the HP TSV special back in November like OP. This is replacing an old Dell that I purchased in 2005 (XP) directly from Dell. The computer more than paid for itself from 2005-2014. I'm really happy with the HP so far. Windows 8.1 is really new to me, but it's very workable and I have no regrets about going with HP or Windows 8.1. There is a ton of support which I used to install my HP printer. It does come with a CD/DVD drive and tutorials on Windows 8.1. IE is 11.0 on this computer. I don't think I would ever install changes that basically go backward. At some point in time changes (i.e., changes to make it more like Windows 7) are bound to really mess the OS up.

Take your time in learning the system - there's a ton of on-line help as well as books. I know that the HP was a good choice for me!
