In researching this issue with dd's laptop, I found a couple of articles that say it's not that big of a deal really that microsoft won't be supporting Windows 7 after 2015.

There is another thread right here in this forum about just this thing. They just are not going to have any more big revisions, like another service pack or something like that. They are still going to have general and security updates until at least 2020.
Vista drops off in 2016 I believe (going from memory here). hehe
ETA - I lied. It's 2017 for Windows Vista. That's what I get for trying to remember something. ![]()

Thank you so much chickenbutt. I thought that's what I was reading. DD can get a new laptop through the school at a discount but it was Windows 7 and I was worried about that. Looks like it will be fine. Thank you again!

Glad to help.
It is comforting to know that you can not only still get a Win7 machine, if that's what you want, but that there are at least six more years of updates and support. Who plans that far ahead with computers anyway, eh?
I almost got another Win7 computer, when I got this Toshiba, but decided to just jump in. A month or so prior I had gotten my husband's new Toshiba with Win8.1 so, by the time I got mine, I was used to it and knew all the tricks to make it the way I wanted it, because I always have to set his up for him. Man, at first, I couldn't find anything. Now it just looks like previous operating systems. yay! I like choices.

I called Microsoft the other day and they told me that Windows 7 would be fine through 2020 and perhaps longer. They said Vista would go long before Windows 7.
Also, just make sure you have Service Pak 1 installed. Updates will keep coming as long as you have the latest Service Pak on your system.
I got Windows 7 a few months ago. I went from my old XP and just couldn't face having to learn Windows 8. I know I'll eventually have a big learning curve one day, but by then, maybe they'll make Windows 8 and beyond less confusing.
