I got the message I could download Windows 10. I had Windows 8.1. I was excited to do so. Easy But
1. Got stuck in airplane mode and could not get out of it Could not connect to the Internet
2. Could not copy important files with drive. Used a portable MY PASSPORT backup device instead.
3. Took Windows 10 off and went back to Windows 8.. then also could not connect to Internet.
I could try again but have no clue why my computer which is about 4 years old (desktop) was so difficult.
Wish I could have adjusted the airplane mode and then I would have been enjoying Windows 10. Now I have to get help, advice, or just forget it.
I did manage to make the connection to the Internet on Windows 8 but it took over an hour to get it to work. Wanted passwords and mine didn't work.

No advice, just sympathy.
I was actually very happy to be told my laptop is too old to update. I'll eventually get a new one, but I'm hoping mine will live until some of the 10 bugs are worked out.

Windows strikes again...

I read something from Consumers Report that said Microsoft isn't upgrading to Windows 10 through emails, it's a scam.

No it was a real upgrade. It just didn't work for me. I called Comcast. They tried to help me. I called a computer service (Geek Squad) and they tried to help and then told me to bring the computer in to a local Best Buy. I called someone who helps me for a big fee. All he wanted to do was come over in a day or so. Not looking to pay someone when all I need is good information for me to handle it myself.
I managed to restore to Windows 8, and then fix the connection issues myself... finally.
Kind of hard to update drivers and whatever if the reason you need to update is the Internet does not connect. The upgrade should have fixed the issue and allowed the program to work. My computer is not that old.

There is no way Consumer Report says that. This is a free upgrade to Windows 10. It is not by email but over internet. You had to reserve to get first dibs which many folks including me did. No problems but took long time because my internet connection was slow.

See if you can do a system restore to a date before you did the windows 10 update.
I've done operating system updates with my Apple computers but I never did it when I used Windows. I always bought a new computer with the latest operating system. By getting a new computer, I knew it was compatible with the latest operating system.
Be advised, just because your computer can handle Windows 10, it doesn't mean your software will. Check it out before installing it.

I'm sorry. I didn't mind Windows 7. I hated. HATED, Windows 8. I am so haappyy with 10. My laptop works so much better & I feel like I know what I am doing on it, again.
