Re: Windows 10 and Automatic Microsoft updates

I would definitely get it OFF of automatic updates.  Just have it to where it lets you know that there are updates and you can install them if and when you want.

I learned many years ago to not let any of my computers be on auto updates.

Unfortunately, Win10 doesn't have that choice and I find that abhorrent.

I would stop that ASAP.  Don't you have the GWX Control Panel installed to keep Win10 out?  After I changed it from auto updates, I would install this.  It's free and doesn't get in the way.  Make sure to set it to monitoring.

@chickenbutt, isn't this just unreal???  I switched back to only doing updates when I allow.  I believe there is a problem with the updates on my computer though.  My last update was Sept 9/16.  I know there are some to go on because when I switched it to auto there were some there in addition to Windows 10.

When I went to check manually for updates, the tiny wheel just spins with no result.  I tried that a few times.

I have my computer backed up to click free.  I hear they went out of business.  I should buy an external hard drive, back the computer up to it and buy a Mac.  This is so frustrating.  LM

PS, there is a note at the bottom of 'Choose how Windows can install updates' page.

it reads as follows:

Note:  Windows Update might update itself automatically first when checking for other updates.  Read our privacy statement online.

Re: Windows 10 and Automatic Microsoft updates

Glad to find this thread.  I upgraded one of my comps to Win10 and actually am getting along fine with it, except - and this a MAJOR except - for email.  Maybe I'm just unenlightened, but I have to go back to my old Win7 laptop to retrieve my archived emails and addresses which I've filed for work purposes.  Mail simply disappears after a period of time with 10.  I won't detail all the quirks, but I've read feedback, and many others have the same opinions.

I'm certainly no expert, but I have heard one conjecture that eventually, Win10 will be the only version supported, with a possible subscription fee.

I will say that Win10 is much faster.  I had numerous pop-ups to "upgrade" my Win7 to 10, but decided to hold out on at least one of my comps.  I have allowed updates, but have managed to avoid the Win10 one.  Not sure I've been of any help, but this has been my experience. Good luck!

Re: Windows 10 and Automatic Microsoft updates

@Lilysmom I don't know why it's doing that, is Win 10 still free?  At any rate, there are supposed to be steps you are prompted to take before Win 10 is installed on your PC (http://www.zdnet.com/article/how-existing-windows-users-can-refuse-microsofts-windows-10-update/).  And if you install it and don't like it, you're supposed to be able to revert back to Win 7.  "Supposed" of course is the operative word.  I think that since you're uncomfortable with Win 10, but not receiving Win 7 updates, it would be best to see a professional, or buy an Apple.

Re: Windows 10 and Automatic Microsoft updates

@ValuSkr, I know.  Lucky me, they have Win 10 reserved for me😩.  I will stumble along with an eye to a new computer sooner than I planned.  Not the end of the world just a PIA.

Thanks everyone.  If anything significantly different changes I will post in case it can help someone else.  LM

Re: Windows 10 and Automatic Microsoft updates

@OooLaLa, thanks for your comments.  I am in a wait and see mode.  I will probably just unplug the computer for a bit and think about this.  I see a new Mac on the horizon.  LM

Re: Windows 10 and Automatic Microsoft updates

@Lilysmom  I've always had PCs because I do a lot of word processing and have been told they are best for that.  If that ever changes, I definitely would consider a Mac. I kind of assume that when it comes to computers, everybody else knows more than I do!  Hope you find exactly what's right for you.
