Hi Geezerette!

I'm sorry that's happening.

You never accepted the upgrade to Win10, right?

Frustrating, I'm sure.

Sometimes computer stuf makes no sense and that's where it ends up losing me.

I do hate the way they seem to be trying to force this o/s upgrade on everybody. If they weren't, there would have been a way to 'opt out' of this solicitation a long time ago. I'm concerned about this, for the long run, and also concerned that it seems like they want to drop IE and it's having more and more problems.

Today's updates have adobe updates in it, so maybe they will continue to support IE, at least, to some degree. *sigh*

No, I never did install Win 10, but a couple of those updates (which I later deleted) got through without me seeing them, so I guess some of the Win10 stuff snuck on there somewhere. I figured it wouldn’t be a problem if I just didn’t click on the installation, but I woke up the other day to check the monthly updates, and it had cornered me! And yes, cb, it certainly is frustrating.

I also do not like the forcing of this on everyone, and from what I’ve read on various sites, neither do a lot of people. Sure, I’ll use their new system, but since I’m a novice, I thought I’d wait to get Win10 on a new computer, already installed, sometime after the first of the year, when I had the time—and hopefully enough brain left—to deal with learning a new O/S. But with this happening, I don’t want to wait too long without getting updates and I don’t want to try to download Win10 myself with all the problems I’ve heard about.

Frankly, I do like the idea of automatic updates without me having to do anything. That sounds great, but what isn’t great is that in the five years I’ve used this Win7 computer, the only times it’s been frozen is from Microsoft’s corrupted updates! I’ve never had a problem with anything I’ve ever done myself. Now I’m afraid I’ll wake up some day to find I can’t use my computer because they automatically messed it up and I’m stuck.

cb, I do appreciate your replies and attempt at help. You, along with several others in the Electronics forum, have helped me numerous times in the past few years, without even knowing it, simply by answering questions from others, in simple, easy to understand language. I’ve learned a lot here!

I'm glad to help when I can. I'm not an expert in this area but I've learned a fair amount over the years.

I did uninstall that one update that somebody here said was pertinent to Windows 10. I think I need to look and see if there are other Windows Updates that are actually for Win10, even though they say they are for, in this case, Win8.1. That's kind of sneaky and I don't appreciate their efforts to start forcing this new o/s.

I have nothing against new operating systems, although I think they are coming up with them WAY too often, instead of putting more effort into making each one as stable and safe as possible. But to try and force you to upgrade the o/s on an existing computer is not cool!

I did it once, years ago, when they had this offer from Vista to 7 and I was fairly lucky. I had some small problems but others had bigger problems. I am convinced that upgrading an o/s in an existing system, unless you are doing a clean install on a clean drive, is not a good idea.

I just wanted to let you know that you were RIGHT! I did have an option just to uncheck the “Upgrade to Windows 10”. I just happened to open the Optional update folder, and voila! There it was, with that nasty little check mark beside it. DUH! I rarely use the Optional updates and so I don’t ever think to check that folder. Thanks to you, I knew to just uncheck it and then hide the update. For some reason I had to do that a couple of times before it ‘took’, but then the Update page(s) reverted back to normal and stayed that way. I was able to install all the monthly updates, although that took much longer than normal—I think my machine was po’d that I had managed to thwart the Win 10 scheme. So, thankfully, I’m up to date and back to normal—until next month (or sooner) when they push all that, or something even trickier, through again.

I did contact a tech guy about this yesterday. He said the best thing to do is just keep a watchful eye out and keep hiding the Win 10 update, not to try and mess with deleting anything on the computer permanently. He also confirmed what I was intending to do all along, which is to (try to) wait for another few months to get a new computer with Win 10 already installed. He said he’s used it since it was in testing, and while it’s “okay”, it still has a few bugs they need to work out.

So, a big THANK YOU, cb! I appreciate all your time and effort on my behalf.

ETA: I just read an article about this forcing of the upgrade. Microsoft said that having the Optional update "checked" was a "mistake" and that they are removing it. Yeah, right.

iT tried to install again over night ..so i changed the setting from atuomatic downloads to let me choose what i want to download.

I found the windows 10 KB3035583 and uninstalled it again!!!!

I had it hid a month ago but ..the icon showed again yesterday for' important' 'downloads' and they snuck windows 10 file in again and i don't want it.

Hey Geez! Ohhhh, so you had signed up for the upgrade so it probably makes more sense that it's pestering you.

I had never accepted the offer so I wasn't getting as much of the push that you were. That's why I mentioned whether or not the offer was initially accepted so I'm super glad you were able to uncheck THAT box!

I'm going through my own brand of heck here between my network, internet, and my Tivos. I just spent a bunch of money buying some different wireless equipment, recommended by a guy at Tivo and not only did it not fix my multi-room viewing and program transferring problem (between Tivos), but it totally skrewed up my network.

After a few more hours of work this morning I'm back where I started. At least the network seems fine again but there are still problems with the service between the two Tivos. For now - I give up!

That sounds similar to what has happened to me. I had hid three-four of those update files, including the one you show above, and they ended up installed at a later date anyway. I never signed up in any way for Win10, just had those updates on my computer and ended up with the Win10 prompt. Thankfully, I never let it update automatically, I always do a few at a time manually because of previous glitches, but since I didn't think to look in the Optional folder for the Win10 update, I assumed I was cooked! I have uninstalled, deleted and hidden about three updates once again after all this, but one keeps showing up in my files no matter how many times I delete it.

I'm going to be as vigilant as I can for the next few months, hoping they don't put anything too sneeky on the updates. As long as I can cancel the Win 10 update and get the monthly security updates, I'm not going to mess with too much else.

I'm also hoping that with all the negative press I see Microsoft has been getting about this "mistake", maybe they'll take the hint and not push this on us so much. I'm not against Win 10, but I absolutely do not want it on this computer. And I want to get it when I have the time and patience to learn a new operating system, not so that it's convenient for them. If I had another alternative, I'd have already switched to another O/S long ago.

Sorry to hear you too are having your own brand of electronic frustration. I know the feeling.

I swear I'd never use a computer again if I didn't need to do a few things on the internet on a daily basis. It's handy when it's working right, but unbelieveably painful when it isn't.

I hear that! I pay my bills online. If I suddenly lost the internet I wouldn't even know where to start, as I get the bills by email.

For now, things seem to be ok, but not before I spent several hours on it. i try everything I can before I call anybody because 90% of the time you get somebody who knows less than you do. Heck, one thing I was working on last night I figured out while I was on hold. Then when the guy came on the line he was absolutely no help then it was like 'thanks for calling'. Uh, yeah, thanks for NOTHING! heh
