Why isn't my Ipad Mini not accepting my network connection

I just got my mini yesterday and already my frustration level is high....trying to figure out terminology, etc. First off, why can't they say on/off button instead of sleep/awake, lol. Got past that and put in my language and country of origin. But it won't accept linksys as my connection source. It suggests connecting to itunes. Far as I know, htat would be another problem since I don't know how to get to itunes. Should I try it, though? I have the online manual but it's not answering this question. This is why I hesitate to try anything techy but at the same time, I hate to remain in the stone age. I have no young people around to help me. Husband is only a little better.
