Re: Which tablet to start with?

I tried starting with a cheap tablet and got an Acer. Big mistake. I could never get it to work right and it was very frustrating. I still don't know if it was the computer or if it was me. My son has an Acer and likes it very much.

So now I have an Ipad mini and I think it is great. It is easy to use, a nice portable size, and worth the money.

If you understand the value of the hardware anything Apple is not a great value for the cost. There are tons of sub $200 Android tablets now that out perform the iPad series. With many name brand Android again you pay for the name and not the performance. Samsung, Toshiba, Asus are all good tablets but they also overcharge for the name. There are good Android Brands like Teclast, Le Pan ( despite some dubious reviews here), are two good brands that give great value and performance. The Gigaset Mini which is here on QVC is an excellent tablet at an amazing price when you consider what you get plus the 8" form factor is one of the best for portability and function.

This sub $200 class of products maybe good for a tech savvy person. I would be concerned about the quality of the hardware. I do agree, the 8 inch tablets have a great form factor, and older folks can see the display. That is why I am a fan of Apple and Samsung tablets with retina displays.

Hubby has an iPad & I have a Kindle Fire HDX. I think the Kindle would be a good choice for the purpose you describe & sale prices are really good.

Re: Which tablet to start with?

If you want to spend much more $$$$ you can go witth the "i guys". If you want the #1 operating system at a much cheaper price? I personally would go with a quad-core Android System tablet. My choice would be an 8", with cameras being unimportant to me. All I would need is a bare minimum in features. If it has the latest KiT-Kat 4.4.2 Android? I can find one for not much more than $100. Try buying an 8 inch "i guy"tablet for anywhere close to $100! You won't!

This is what we have too.

My daughter bought the newest Samsung and gave me her Kindle fire, the larger one, which is my first tablet. It was a few years old when she gave it to me and I recently had to send it off to have the battery replaced.

I find the Kindle to be very user friendly, and for my purposes, it works fine. I used my husband's IPad while mine was out, and was happy to get my Kindle back.

This was true a couple of years ago, but these days unless you are buying a white box tablet straight from China the hardware quality isn't likely to be a concern. Right now you can buy a Teclast 8 inch retina that dual boots Win 8 and Android for $200 that is excellent quality. When these companies try to tell you about their superior hardware they forget to mention that there is only X number of factories that make this stuff and they order from the same ones the lesser known brands do.

Re: Which tablet to start with?

Once again, Mac people will prefer Mac products. I LOVE my Apple equipment, keep it for a LONG time, use it constantly and really get my money's worth. If I were tech-savvy, I might well give something else a try. After several terrible attempts at using Dell computers, I have gone entirely to Mac. You really have to consider what you like to use and what works for you. I suspect that for someone who has NEVER used computers it might be reasonable to think that Apple equipment is somewhat easier to learn on than products from other suppliers.

I bought a Kindle first, then an Ipad. I use my Kindle much more because of ease of use.
