Which digital camera is best for traveling?

My son is going on a high school trip to Europe. He will be traveling around and taking lots of pictures. At first we looked at cameras that run on batteries so he wouldn't have to worry about charging. Then we found out he'd probably be changing the batteries about three times a day, so that's out! We have a small Canon, which is great, but it only has about a 3 zoom. We were thinking one with about 8 would be good.

I also heard Sony cameras have the longest battery life. Did anyone else hear that?

I'll appreciate any recommendations or comments you can give me - thanks!
