What is a Stylus (Styli?) used for?

I thought it was to use instead of your fingers for navigating your Ipad but it doesn't work well for me. I have long nails (I cut them down some) and have to use the side of my thumb to do anything. I ordered a ipad cover (Blason) that came with a stylus but it doesn't do anything. Looked on You tube and it shows it doing drawing??? I have the feeling that I should have never stepped out of my comfort zone by buying an ipad, lol. Too much to learn.

ETA: I'm going to take a workshop at the Apple Store.
