WONDERFUL WORLD of TECHNOLOGY

Can someone PLEASE advise me on this piece of carp that is referred to a computer?

I cannot figure out why I can't get on games I have played for years.

I x out a tab and it closes the browser.

I am informed by a site I do not have JAVA or FLASH, BUT windows informs me I have it.

This thing freezes up like crazy.

 HOWEVER, QVC isn't jumping.

Thanking you in advance.---------tedEbear

Chances are, the games aren't compatible with the newest operating system.  You can always go to the Java and Adobe Flash websites and manually download and installed the latest versions.

The same thing happened to me on my iMac.  I upgraded to the newest OS and I have several games that no longer play.

@tedEbear

Over the years I have lost countless important programs when new versions of Windows OS were introduced. Short of keeping an old computer, those programs were not, and never be, compatible with each new OS.

It certainly is frustrating when this happens. I spent weeks getting spreadsheets made up/word programs lost, which fortunately, some I had printed and could scan in or copy/paste.

I had a address label program with over 300 names I lost, not printed, and had to go through a stack of member lists and type all the info back into a compatible similar program.

New technologies have downsides, sometimes it seems like more than the upsides.

Technology keeps marching on.

The good news is you shouldn't have to worry about cosftware becoming obsolete in the future. Windows 10 is reportedly the last OS Windows will release. From now on all changes will be within the Windows 10 framework. They're going from an operating system method of operation to an ecosystem method. Anything you buy for Windows 10 should stay compatible forever. (Or so they say.)

I'd personally love it if someone came out with a simpler, safer OS. When you look at how computer hardware has advanced (my first computer had a single core 1.2 Mhz Penium One Processor and you can now get as many as ten cores and speeds up to 4.0+ Ghz) and you contrast that to the speed and ease of use, something doesn't quite add up. Hardware has gotten vastly better, but the user experience is still largely the same. The reason is largely due to the vast operating systems used nowadays. Windows 10 takes 16 GB's of space. Why not go back to something like WIndows 95 (the first "modern" WIndows OS) that was very compact, but efficient and combine it with the modern hardware? A modern, state-of-the-art computer running a Windows 95 sized OS would be lightning quick.

It's just kind of bizarre that with vastly quicker memory speeds, SSD hard drives, CPU's that are faster on a hundred fold scale or more, and improvements in every piece of hardware, that the experience isn't vastly better. Given those advancements in hardware the computers should be reading our minds, but in reality the user experience is pretty much the same as it was twenty years ago. The Internet's gotten faster, but the rest of the computing experience is pretty much the same.

Interesting info, Gardenman!  I was not aware of any of that with Win10 being (allegedly?  hehe) their last OS.  Thank You.

Ted - Sorry you're having those problems.  I don't know enough about your scenario to know the answers, but I hope you find them.

I haven't purchased a new computer with Win10 yet, so I'm not familiar with it at all, nor would even contemplate upgrading the OS on one of my existing computers.  Too many possible incompatibilies for me to want to have to deal with replacing softwares and such.

Re: WONDERFUL WORLD of TECHNOLOGY

Yeah, it's an interesting concept. Microsoft is tired of supporting multiple operating systems, so they're now focusing on just Windows 10 and will make any changes within the Windows 10 framework. They lose the revenue they'd get from selling new operating systems, but they'll make it up by selling add on services. It should make life easier for them. If you do a search for Windows 11 you'll find multiple articles insisting there won't be a Windows 11. It's a pretty major change in Microsoft's business model, but it should lead to lower operating expenses down the road.

Re: WONDERFUL WORLD of TECHNOLOGY

It does seem odd and I couldn't possibly imagine that they wouldn't contemplate more advanced technology.  I can only surmise that this OS is built in such a completely different manner, from previous ones, that it can accommodate changes/updates that allow it to keep up.  Or something - ha!

I know that Win7 is supported until 2020 and Win8.1 until 2023, but I imagine I will purchase another computer (well, laptop, as I'm a laptop girl) at some point and see what Win10 is all about.  i hope laptops don't become obsolete.  I have no interest in smaller types of computing devices, especially with on-screen keyboard types of deals.
