VHS/DVR

What kind of recorder do I need if I want to transfer my VHS workout videos (Leslie Sansone) to a DVR. Also, I don't know if this would matter, but I don't have a HD flat screen tv (still have the old kind) and if I would decided to buy a flat screen would the same recorder work?
