Upgrading IE and Windows?

I currently have IE 8 and XP and know that I need to upgrade. Which one do I do first? I'm thinking of doing IE 10 but not sure which Windows one to do. Do I have to remove the old ones first? CAN I do this on my own?{#emotions_dlg.scared} Thanks.

While I'm here - I get knocked off Facebook about every five minutes. Any ideas or suggestions to remedy the problem. I did contact FB and was told they don't deal with individual probems. Thanks again.
